Merton building

This sub-series focusses on the Merton building, erected on the site of the old Ashburton Dining Hall. It was in use on the first day of the 1991 Winter term and the official opening ceremony took place on 26 November. Michael McCrum, former Trustee and Master of Corpus Christi, Cambridge, opened the new block. It comprised “spacious corridors, staff rooms for each subjects and twenty-four comfortable and acoustically effective classrooms”. The building was named after OO Thomas Merton (‘32). The Headmaster, Graham Smallbone, planted a tree outside the entrance to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the Diocese of Peterborough. This new building houses the English, Maths and History Departments.

Stretching back to the headmastership of Dr. Doncaster, this collection comprehensively covers the correspondence, publications, photographs and other ephemera of the headmasters of Oakham School up to the present day. For many of the headmasters, correspondence and rolls calls are a significant theme in their series.

This collection also contains an excellent record of speeches and sermons given by G. Talbot Griffiths and John Buchanan.

The final series on reports covers the headmaster's, deputy headmaster's and registers writings on the state of the school, including topics such as building and estate development, admissions, the curriculum, examination results, and Old Oakhamians.
