Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
Items have been acquired from many different sources over several years. Much of the material has been donated directly from the respective houses and housemasters/mistresses.
Content and structure area
Scope and content
This collection contains material relating to the history of the houses and their pupils. Each series is focused on a different house and many contain rich and detailed photographic records of houses year by year. Some houses are more detailed than others.
Other highlights of this collection include house handbooks, which help to induct a pupil into a house and its daily routine; photographs of daily life, including house events and leisure time; and administrative documents such as house diaries which record the calendar of house events, achievements of pupils, and accounts of incidents.
Included in this sub-fonds are houses which are no longer in existence such as Johnsons and Ruddles.
Appraisal, destruction and scheduling
As far as is recorded, these items are fully appraised into the collection.
Accruals
It is expected that this series will continue to see acquisitions regularly in the future.
System of arrangement
This sub-fonds is divided in 23 series, each focusing on a different school house. Due to the nature of collecting, material has been sorted in each series into various themes. Material has as such has been added into any series or sub-series based upon date of accession. Any digital files are stored in folders that replicate the series arrangement.

There may be concerns of child protection regarding the more recent house photographs. Names are attached to some of the photographs and these may be redacted when made publicly available.

The copyright for many of the house photographs belong to the photographers or photographic companies. The archives have limited copyright clearance to use Brian and Elizabeth Nicholls photography. Any production of photographs produced by other photographers will need to be approved by external third parties.
