Notes from John Barber to Michael Stevens regarding the celebrations of the 450th anniversary of the birth of Archdeacon Robert Johnson.

This series focusses on the headmastership of John David Buchanan (1958-1977) and contains items relating to the life at School in the 1960s and 1970s, its staff and pupils. The bulk of the series consists of books, publications, letters, speeches and sermons written by Mr Buchanan himself.

This collection contains material relating to the history of the houses and their pupils. Each series is focused on a different house and many contain rich and detailed photographic records of houses year by year. Some houses are more detailed than others.

Other highlights of this collection include house handbooks, which help to induct a pupil into a house and its daily routine; photographs of daily life, including house events and leisure time; and administrative documents such as house diaries which record the calendar of house events, achievements of pupils, and accounts of incidents.

Included in this sub-fonds are houses which are no longer in existence such as Johnsons and Ruddles.

A speech given by Headmaster John Buchanan on Speech Day 1974, paying tribute to the Guest of Honour, the Provost of Derby, discussing the increase in numbers and co-education, the building programme, and the retirement of Jack and Betty Barber. This file contains photographs and negatives of two groups of Housemasters of Wharflands and their wives. The first generation of Wharflands Housemasters was: Rev F.H. Jerwood (1920-1937), Bertie Bowes (1937-1959) and John Barber (1959-1974). The next generation of Wharflands Housemasters was: John Barber, Malcolm Hardy (1974-1987) and Val Harvey (1987-2001).

This series focusses on the headmastership of Francis Cecil Doherty (1929-1935) and contains items relating to the life at School in the early 20th century, its staff and pupils.
