Photographic and Art Collection

A collection of photographs and artworks of the school campus and buildings, and pupils and staff.

There is one series dedicated to a large collection of photographic negatives which show the campus, daily life at school, and special events. These cover the period 1978 - 1988.

One series focus on the frescoes painted by Mary Sargant Florence in Old School and is rich in research about the frescoes and the artist.

A collection which focuses on the history of the school campus and buildings. There is an excellent photographic record of the school campus including the development of both houses and teaching buildings.

The collection contains architectural plans for buildings and press releases/ photographs of the opening of new additions to the school campus.

This sub-fonds contains general policy documents more relevant to the estates and IT daily functions.

The three series divide this sub-fonds amongst buildings, campus services, and IT.

Library and Archives

This collection covers the history of all the libraries of Oakham School as well as the creation and daily working of the archives.

The Library series has material relating to each regeneration of the library (Smallbone, War Memorial). There is a rich photographic record of the opening and daily running of the Smallbone Library accompanied by administrative documents such as catalogues.

Under the Archives series, material cover correspondence with external readers and research into the history of the school and its pupils. There are also archive committee meeting minutes which show the evolution of the archives from its inception in 2010.

This collection focuses on major events that have occurred to the school and its pupils. This includes the Quatercentenary celebrations and the school's reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Quatercentenary celebrations compromised of several events including the visit to the school by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Quatercentenary ball, and special productions to celebrate the recent opening of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

There is a detailed series on the school's Speech Day which includes a comprehensive list of programmes and award winners from the ceremony.

There is a excellent record of items showing how the school reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is general communication to parents and staff, information on the structure of face to face and distance learning teaching, and also an illuminating collection of photographs taken by Ms. Fernandez in 2021.

This collection draws together material produced for and by the marketing department of Oakham School. Particular strengths of the collection include press cuttings and publication material (prospectuses, handbooks, maps etc.).

Press cuttings from multiple local and national newspapers have been collected together by marketing staff, gathering together news of Old Oakhamians.

Publications contain material produced for new admissions into the school and contain detailed information about uniform, curriculum, pastoral care, and general daily life of the school.

This collection consists of the mainly the non-paper aspects of the archives collection. The collection is random in its make up but has a good material collection which highlights the changing nature of the school's uniform.

Items in this collection range in material type and stem from a variety of sources such as the Quatercentenary celebrations or items that were once used daily on the school grounds (such as building plaques or clock hands).

Houses

This collection contains material relating to the history of the houses and their pupils. Each series is focused on a different house and many contain rich and detailed photographic records of houses year by year. Some houses are more detailed than others.

Other highlights of this collection include house handbooks, which help to induct a pupil into a house and its daily routine; photographs of daily life, including house events and leisure time; and administrative documents such as house diaries which record the calendar of house events, achievements of pupils, and accounts of incidents.

Included in this sub-fonds are houses which are no longer in existence such as Johnsons and Ruddles.

This collection covers the multitude of sports that pupils can do at Oakham School. Sports include cricket, rugby, hockey, athletics, netball and swimming as some of the richest in terms of items in the sub-series.

Most sub-series have a good photographic record of first teams, alongside comprehensive fixture and team lists. Some sub-series will contain correspondence, programmes and administrative documents.

There is an extensive collection of trophies and shields awarded to pupils and Old Oakhamians for their sporting achievements.

Oakhamian Magazines

An almost complete collection of Oakham School magazines dating from 1884. Some editions are available as individuals whilst others can be found in larger bound volumes. There is also a collection of the Old Oakhamian magazine which is a separate school magazine for Old Oakhamians and their news.

This magazine covers all aspects of school life. Sporting, academic, and artistic achievements of the pupils are celebrated alongside news updates from various departments. In later issues, c. 1980s, houses are given space to announce news and in house achievements.

Sporting records are a key component of the magazine since its inception and there are accounts of matches (including scores and teams) in each edition. Again, since the 1980s, focus has shifted to also include all of the teams that compete for the school, instead of just focusing on the A team.

Images and photographs start to appear in the magazines from the 1970s and the magazine was first printed fully in colour in the 1990s.
